Comparison · BUILDCASTER

Considering a Canny alternative? Start with the job.

Both products connect feedback, roadmaps, and release updates. The useful question is whether you need a focused customer portal or a broader system that also captures conversations and connects feedback to revenue.

This comparison is written by BuildCaster, not an independent reviewer. Canny facts were checked against its public pages on September 18, 2026. We have not run a hands-on Canny account evaluation.

Compare the billing basis, not just the headline

Canny defines tracked users as people associated with feedback, including posts, votes, and comments entered directly or on their behalf. Its optional spend limit pauses new user tracking at the limit; without that cap, exceeding a tier can trigger an upgrade. Check the current Canny pricing page for your usage and billing interval.

BuildCaster’s monthly price and Canny’s advertised annual-billing starting price are not equivalent payment terms. We do not claim BuildCaster is always cheaper. Canny’s free plan can be a better fit when a small free footprint is enough. BuildCaster has a trial, not a permanent free software plan.

The workflow both products cover

Canny offers a customer feedback system, product roadmaps, and a changelog. Its roadmap material emphasizes revenue context and prioritization; its changelog supports customer-facing updates and notifications.

BuildCaster keeps one card connected across Ideas, Roadmap, and What’s new. Your team reviews submissions before publication, records Not planned or Cancelled explanations, links shipped cards to an announcement, and sees which cards have been announced. Voting and email following are separate.

In either evaluation, run a real example through the whole loop. Submit a request, moderate it, add a duplicate, record a decision, ship it, and publish a linked update. A feature checkbox will not tell you how much coordination that takes.

Where the products have different scope

See Canny’s integration directory and roadmap overview for its current scope. Availability and limits vary by plan; this table is not a promise that every integration is included at the entry price.

Which one would we choose?

Our recommendation is about scope, not a measured productivity or retention advantage. We do not have comparative customer outcome data.

  • Evaluate BuildCaster if one product, a small team, a branded portal, clear moderation, and linked release communication are the work you need to do.
  • Evaluate Canny if support-conversation ingestion, CRM context, development integrations, multiple organizational views, or enterprise identity requirements are central to your process.
  • Consider staying with a small manual process if you cannot yet name the person who will review feedback. A tool does not create product ownership.

Check migration before you decide

BuildCaster imports mapped CSV ideas into an unpublished review queue. It is not a complete Canny account importer: do not assume comments, identities, notification permissions, old links, or historical decisions will be recreated. Existing support should remain labeled as imported rather than becoming verified votes.

Export and preserve the original system first. Test a small sample, inspect the mapped records, then decide how you will communicate the move. The spreadsheet migration guide walks through those checks.

Open the working demo before starting a trial. It uses fictional examples and has AI disabled. For the actual product workflow, see feature requests, roadmaps, and release updates.
